Docu Book – Best of Documentary & Street Photography.

I applied for Docu Magazine's open call in May 2023. After completing the form, I had the choice of having my Instagram account reviewed by a staff member or submitting photographs for evaluation. I struggled to narrow down what photographs to submit. I opted for Instagram.

By the 24th of May, I received an email to say I had been successful. I couldn't wait to see what this meant. Even more thrilled to view the images that had been chosen. Admittedly, I was taken aback. Not a single picture that I intended to send was chosen. They were photographs that I didn’t think were worthy of being published. The next step was to answer the interview questions.

Since writing this blog post, I have been reflecting on my answers.

Question one:

“I suppose there isn’t much of a story. I got my first camera when I was younger, a small digital point-and-shoot. So, I did what any young annoying sibling would do, take photos of my family 24/7.”

This is still my story. However, when I think about my childhood I was surrounded by cameras. I am very lucky and grateful that my parents were able to document our childhood. My siblings and I have an 8-year age gap. In the videos, I am often a baby and therefore too young to remember. It’s so nice to look back and see my family in that way. The way I interacted with my dad. How playful he was with me. It’s heart-warming to see him like that. It's a reminder of all the good we had as children, how lucky and privileged we were. I will forever be grateful for it to have all been captured, through both film photography and video. For as long as I can remember, I have been surrounded by cameras. It is no surprise I became a photographer.

Question three:

Make a photobook or Zine. Start sequencing your work. The final physical copy of a photobook and the progress of editing down your photos is so special. You store thousands of photos on your laptop that are just waiting, print them out, and start sequencing. It makes you see your work in a different light and creates project after project even from work you never expected. I am biased, I fell in love with the process of bookmaking, every aspect. Especially binding the book yourself.

By the 1st of June 2023, I had my first publish. Docu Book Vol 26 – Best of Documentary & Street Photography.
